My birthday is in January. Not the best time of year to plan a campout. I’ve planned this lovely hike to a pretty creekside campsite. The agenda is to find a likely spot next to the water to set up for twilight wildlife photos. Then set camp just far enough away and lay out a campfire to light afterward. Post-photo shoot, light the fire, plunk a birthday candle on a dehydrated cheesecake and sing myself Happy Birthday. Then a little nip from the flask and toddle off to bed to watch the fire burn down.
My pack is packed, the maps are printed, route planned on GPS. I’m all ready to go, just waiting for a sunny stretch long enough to dry out the trail.
